About us

Gary’s Pianos was started in 1978 selling quality used pianos. We then branched out into refurbishing and restoration as our business was growing. We moved into Harrisonburg VA and began selling new pianos. Our goal was to find high end american and foreign pianos to meet any price range. Charles R Walter is one of the last two american piano manufacturers and is all hand made and their award-winning design is unmatched. We also sell Kawai, a Japanese company, which is the number two piano manufacturer in the world. We carry both their acoustic and digital piano line. They provide top notch quality for a reasonable price

Commitment to Quality

We pride ourselves in the commitment to the highest quality in every stage of the piano’s life. From the annual tuning to the complete restoration, we cover every step in our full-service shop. We can even do most of these things on location in your church or home. We have been in business for over 35 years and have been located right here in the Shenandoah Valley.

Who we are:

Gary Kerlin:

Born and raised in the valley, Gary grew up in New Market, VA and played in bands from 15 to 27. He married his wife Connie in 1977. Connie retired from working at JMU recently and  works at the store part time. Gary started working on pianos in 1968. He began his own business in Grottoes in 1981 until 1988 when he moved the business to Harrisonburg. Gary's hands-on, customer first approach has helped him to satisfy many customers, selling pianos to professional musicians, college students, and families through the years without a single return. His experience helps him to know what we're buying for stock and can assure the longevity and quality of the pianos we sell. He can help you get what you need!

Alan Heneberry:

A registered technician in the Piano Technicians Guild, Alan has been working for Gary's for 13 years now. Alan has a long history of professional technician work including being the president of a local chapter of the Piano Technicians Guild in Northern Virginia. He heads up the higher end repair work and tuning on professional instruments. Alan's extensive knowledge of the instrument's fine points can help you feel assured that the instruments that go through this shop are well taken care of. If you have any questions about a piano, Alan will most likely have the answer or know where to find it!

John Hazelwood:

With a background in music education, woodwind instrument repair, and digital keyboards, John adds another layer of depth to the shop. Starting his apprenticeship over a year ago, John has started to become well acquainted with the basics of the pianos and can answer most questions your average piano buyer has. Being a current music teacher and music education advocate you can be assured that you won't be talked into getting things you won't need but you also won't be left with a handicap as you start learning on your new piano or keyboard!
